A car loan pre approval can help you shop with a clearer budget. It is usually a conditional indication, not a guarantee that every vehicle or final application will be approved.

What a pre approval may confirm

Depending on the lender, a pre approval can indicate a maximum loan amount, expected term and conditions that must be satisfied. It may be based on your verified income, living costs, existing debts and credit history.

Some early estimates use limited information and do not involve a full application. Others include a formal credit enquiry. Ask which process is being used before you consent.

Why the vehicle still matters

The final car must meet lender criteria. Age, kilometres, condition, purchase source and market value can change the result. A private sale vehicle can also require seller and PPSR checks.

If the chosen car is materially different from the one described in the pre approval, the lender may recalculate the deal or request a deposit.

Watch the expiry date and conditions

Pre approvals are time limited. Income, employment, expenses and credit conduct must generally remain consistent. New debts or a change in circumstances can affect the final assessment.

Read the conditions and ask:

  • whether a credit enquiry has been made;
  • how long the pre approval lasts;
  • what vehicle rules apply;
  • whether the rate is fixed or indicative; and
  • which documents are still required.

Use the budget, not only the maximum

The maximum available amount is not automatically the right amount to borrow. Compare the repayment with insurance, registration, servicing and a buffer for unexpected costs. A repayment calculator can help you test different amounts, terms and rates before choosing the car.

Good pre approval should make the purchase calmer: you know the working budget, understand the remaining conditions and can focus on finding a suitable vehicle.

Useful next steps.
