Practical finance guide

Check the used car before finalising the finance

Finance approval covers the credit decision. Mechanical condition, ownership, vehicle history, PPSR information and seller details require their own checks.

Older cars can have shorter available terms

Lender policy may cap the vehicle's age at loan maturity or require a contribution.

Private sale checks are essential

Verify VIN, seller identity, registration, payout instructions and any security interest before settlement.

Price and valuation can differ

A lender may limit finance where the purchase price is materially above its assessed value.

Repair risk belongs in the budget

Keep part of the available budget for servicing, tyres and unexpected repairs alongside the repayment, registration, insurance and any immediate maintenance identified during inspection.

Questions worth resolving before an application

  • Arrange an independent inspection.
  • Search the PPSR using the correct VIN.
  • Confirm payout and seller banking independently.
  • Budget for immediate servicing and repairs.

Product details, evidence and practical finance pathways

Use this page when the car is second-hand, demonstrator or ex-fleet and vehicle age, kilometres, condition or term limits drive lender choice. Use the private-sale page when the seller and settlement channel are the main issue.

Common brands and models

Toyota LandCruiser and Camry, Ford Ranger, Mazda 3 and CX-5, Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Nissan Patrol, Volkswagen Golf, BMW X Series, Mercedes-Benz GLE.

Vehicles and purchase channels

dealer used cars, private sales, ex-fleet vehicles, ex-demonstrators, older vehicles, high-kilometre cars, refinance.

Documents that support assessment

VIN, registration, PPSR result, service history, inspection, seller identification, purchase agreement, payout letter.

Vehicle value and term selection for used car finance

Used-car value depends on age, kilometres, condition, model demand and service history. These factors also influence term limits and lender selection.

A balloon can reduce scheduled repayments and creates a final amount due at the end of the term. Comparing the 0% balloon result with a selected residual shows the cash-flow effect and the total repayment difference.

Dealer, private sale and refinance pathways

Dealer invoices usually provide vehicle and seller details in one document. Private purchases require seller identity, ownership, payout and PPSR checks. Refinance applications also require a current payout letter.

A complete file links the purchase price, deposit, trade-in, current liabilities and comfortable repayment to the applicant's verified income and regular expenses.

Broker strategy

How we overcome common scenarios

Each scenario starts with the customer's goal, the available evidence and the lender policies that fit the complete application.

Scenario 1

Private-sale used car finance

Situation

The buyer has found a suitable vehicle through a private seller and needs a secure settlement process.

How X Lend approaches it

We confirm the seller, vehicle, PPSR status and payout position, then coordinate lender payment instructions with both parties.

Useful evidence

Seller identification, registration details, VIN, purchase agreement, payout letter where relevant and the buyer's income documents.

Scenario 2

Recent employment change

Situation

The applicant has moved into a new role with stable current income and a limited history in that position.

How X Lend approaches it

We review the employment type, probation terms and continuity of occupation, then compare lenders whose employment policy fits the verified position.

Useful evidence

Employment contract, recent payslips, bank credits and evidence of prior work in the same field.

Scenario 3

Previous credit issues with current affordability

Situation

Older credit events appear on the file while recent banking conduct and income show a stronger current position.

How X Lend approaches it

We explain the event, confirm its status and present the current affordability evidence to lenders that assess the complete credit story.

Useful evidence

Credit report, proof of payment or release, recent bank statements, payslips and a written explanation of the circumstances.

Before you apply

Eligibility and documents

Every lender weighs things a little differently, but most look at the same fundamentals, and with a used car, the vehicle's details matter as much as yours.

What lenders assess

  • A current Australian driver licence.
  • Stable, verifiable income, PAYG, self employed or a mix of both.
  • Your credit history, including how past loans and bills have been handled.
  • Existing commitments: rent or mortgage, other loans and credit card limits.
  • The vehicle's age at the end of the term for secured loans, many lenders set a cap here.
  • For private sales, confirmation the car is clear of any existing finance.

What to have ready

  • Driver licence (front and back).
  • Your two most recent payslips.
  • Around 90 days of bank statements.
  • The vehicle's details, registration, VIN and odometer reading.
  • The seller's details and bank account for settlement, if it's a private sale.
  • A recent rates notice if you own property.
  • A payout letter for the existing loan if you're refinancing.

Rates and repayments

  4. Step 04

    Settlement

We handle the paperwork, get your documents signed, and your loan settles, funds released to you or the seller.

Available structures

Choose a structure that fits the purchase

Used cars reward a bit of thought on structure, because the car's age changes which options make sense:

Fixed rate secured car loan

The car acts as security, which typically earns a sharper rate, and repayments stay the same for the life of the loan. It suits late model used cars comfortably, the main catch is that many lenders cap the vehicle's age at the end of the term.

Unsecured personal loan for older cars

No security is taken over the vehicle, so its age and kilometres generally don't come into it. The rate is usually a little higher, but for an older car or a cheap private sale bargain it can be the cleanest route to the keys.

Balloon or residual payment

A lump sum left to the end of the loan in exchange for lower monthly repayments. It's available on many used cars too, though the options narrow as the vehicle gets older, depending on the lender.

Terms typically one to seven years

Shorter terms cost less in total interest; longer terms ease the monthly budget. On older vehicles some lenders trim the maximum term, so we match the term to both your budget and the car.

Deposit or no deposit

Many lenders will finance the full purchase price of a used car. A deposit isn't essential, but on an older vehicle it can widen your lender options as well as shrink the repayments.

The basics

Used car finance without the age limits holding you back.

Compare used car finance across 80+ lenders for dealer, demo, ex-fleet and private-sale vehicles, with pre-approval and settlement checks.

The best value on wheels is often a well kept used car, but plenty of lenders get fussy about age and kilometres. X Lend is a finance broker: we take one application and compare it across a panel of 80+ banks and nonbank lenders to find one that's genuinely comfortable with the car you've found.

Whether it's a late model SUV on a dealer lot, an ex fleet or demo runabout, or a clean private sale you spotted on Facebook Marketplace, we sort the finance around the purchase. Lenders vary enormously on vehicle age, odometer readings and private sales, so matching your car to the right one is where a broker earns its keep, and we can get you preapproved first so you negotiate like a cash buyer.

Our accredited panel gives older cars access to several lender pathways. We explain every number in plain English, handle private-sale checks and lodge only after you choose to proceed. An initial quote leaves your credit file untouched.

Important to know.

Worried the car is too old or has too many kilometres? Some lenders on our panel have no upper age limit on used vehicles, and with an unsecured loan, the car's age generally isn't considered at all.

Before you decide

The benefit of moving now and the cost of waiting

A useful comparison considers both what the finance may make possible and what leaving the underlying need unresolved may continue to cost.

Pros

  • Access a suitable used car without waiting to save the full purchase price.
  • Keep more savings available for emergencies and other household expenses.
  • Replace an unreliable or unsuitable asset before downtime and repair costs increase.

Cons

  • Work, family commitments or travel can remain disrupted without a reliable and suitable asset.
  • An older asset can keep breaking down when there is not enough cash available to replace it outright.
  • Paying the full purchase price from savings can leave less buffer for unexpected expenses.

Purchases and purposes

What you can finance.

If it's preowned and priced right, there's usually a lender for it. We regularly arrange finance for:

Compare the fit

Who it suits and when to compare alternatives

A strong fit

  • Buyers whose car has already been knocked back by one bank over age, kilometres or a private sale.
  • Private sale and Facebook Marketplace buyers who want the seller and finance checks handled properly.
  • Ex fleet, ex lease and auction buyers who need to move quickly on good value.
  • Anyone who wants pre approval before inspecting, so they can commit on the spot with confidence.
  • Owners refinancing an existing used car loan to see if a sharper rate is on the table.

Compare another option

  • Vehicles bought under an ABN for business use, a chattel mortgage through our business vehicle finance side usually stacks up better.
  • Buyers set on a brand new car, our new car finance page is the better starting point.
  • Anyone after a guaranteed approval, we'll always tell you what's realistic before anything touches your credit file.

Application clarity

Common roadblocks and the next practical step

Used-car declines commonly relate to vehicle policy such as age, kilometres or purchase channel. Here is what we see most and how we work through each point:

The car is too old for the lender's policy

Many lenders cap the vehicle's age at the end of the term, so a twelve year old car on a seven year loan gets an automatic no. We look for a lender without that cap, shorten the term, or switch to an unsecured loan where the car's age generally isn't considered.

A private sale the bank wouldn't touch

Some banks simply don't fund private sales. Plenty of lenders on our panel do, the application just needs the seller and encumbrance checks done properly, which is exactly the part we handle.

Recent defaults or a burst of enquiries

Mainstream banks often decline on the marks alone. Specialist lenders will read the story behind them, and sometimes the smartest move is simply waiting a few months before applying, we'll tell you honestly which it is.

Income that's too new

Casual work or a job still in probation can trip a lender that wants a longer track record. Others are comfortable with a shorter history, and if none fit today, a couple more pay cycles often changes the answer.

Serviceability that's too tight

When the numbers are close, small changes matter: reducing unused credit card limits, adding a deposit, adjusting the term or picking a slightly cheaper car can all bring an application back into range.

Leah Rose Lucas

I can’t recommend Corey from X Lend highly enough. From the very first conversation, he was professional, transparent, and genuinely focused on finding the best outcome for me. Corey took the time to explain every step of the finance process in a way that was easy to understand, answered all my questions promptly, and never once made me feel rushed or pressured. I really appreciated how proactive he was, keeping me updated, following up with lenders, and making sure everything stayed on track. What really stood out was how hard he worked to secure a great deal. He compared multiple lenders, negotiated on my behalf, and ultimately achieved a rate and repayment structure that exceeded my expectations. The whole process of purchasing my car was smooth and stress‑free thanks to their expertise. If you’re looking for someone knowledgeable, reliable, and genuinely in your corner, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. I’ll definitely be using their services again in the future :)

Corey helped me through the entire process of getting my dream family car! He was extremely prompt with his responses and had everything organised quickly and smoothly. I made a huge mistake by settling finance on the wrong car (a 5‑seater instead of a 7‑seater), but Corey was incredibly understanding and supportive. He contacted the dealership, lender, and even rearranged my insurance for me. He did all of this without ever making me feel like a hassle, even though I knew I was being a pain! Despite the setback, Corey stayed fast and efficient, kept me confident throughout the process, and managed to get everything cancelled and re‑approved for a higher amount so I could get my actual dream car. I highly recommend Corey. He speaks to you like a friend and genuinely has your best interests at heart. I already had quotes from Toyota Finance and Toyota Insurance, and Corey was able to get both significantly cheaper. Toyota Finance even reviewed Corey’s figures and confirmed they couldn’t beat them. I will never look to another finance company again.

My first experience with a broker, Corey made the whole process so smooth and simple and stress free. Communication was outstanding, he explained everything so I could understand what was happening as it was happening and kept me in the loop for the whole process, he was so kind and friendly and happy to answer any questions I had. He went above and beyond what I expected and has helped me greatly with his expertise. It was a fast process from start to finish and will definitely be using X lend for any future financial matters! Thanks Corey!

Rachelle Hudson

I was trying to get a loan for my dream car but was struggling getting approved with my bank but Corey was extremely helpful throughout the entire loan process. He followed up with multiple lenders, secured me a much better interest rate than my initial CommBank offer, and stayed persistent on my behalf. He kept me updated every step of the way, and I genuinely don’t think I would have been approved without his support. The customer service was very professional and friendly. Highly recommend to everyone

Questions Answered

Used Car Finance That Fits frequently asked questions

Straight answers to common questions before you compare finance or start an application.

We're a finance broker: we compare a panel of 80+ banks and nonbank lenders and place your used car loan with the one offering the best fit and rate for the car you've chosen.

Usually, yes. Lenders apply different limits for vehicle age and kilometres. We compare the car across the panel and match it with a lender whose policy accommodates those details.

Yes. Plenty of our lenders fund both private sales and dealership purchases. We handle the extra checks, confirm the seller and check the car's existing finance position so the deal can settle smoothly.

It depends on the lender. Some cap the car's age at the end of the term, while others have no upper limit at all. Because we compare 80+ lenders, we can usually find one comfortable with an older vehicle, and an unsecured loan generally sidesteps the question entirely.

No. An indicative quote from us doesn't touch your credit file. A formal application involves a credit check, but we only lodge with a lender once you're happy to go ahead.

Yes. Many lenders on our panel are comfortable with auction purchases, including ex fleet and ex government sales. The key is having pre approval sorted before the hammer falls, so you can bid knowing your limit and settle within the auction house's timeframe.

Yes, a good used car doesn't have to be local. The finance works the same way wherever the car is; we coordinate settlement with the seller and the lender, and you organise the inspection, transport and registration transfer for your state. It's worth having the car independently inspected before you commit.

Very common, and entirely workable. At settlement, the lender pays out the seller's existing loan directly and sends any balance to the seller, so the car comes to you clear of their finance. We manage the payout letter and the checks so nothing is left hanging over the vehicle.

Often, yes, though the options narrow as the car gets older, since lenders think about what the vehicle will be worth when the balloon falls due. On a late model used car it's frequently available; on an older one, a straight loan usually makes more sense. We'll price both so you can compare.

Common examples include Toyota LandCruiser and Camry, Ford Ranger, Mazda 3 and CX-5, Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Nissan Patrol. The exact lender pathway depends on the applicant, purpose, asset and documents.

Useful evidence can include VIN, registration, PPSR result, service history, inspection, seller identification. X Lend confirms the documents required for the selected lender pathway before submission.

We define the funding goal, organise the available evidence, identify the policy issues and compare lenders whose criteria fit the complete application. The customer reviews the proposed pathway before a lender submission.
