Answer first

The short answer

Compare the current payout, replacement fees, remaining term and total future cost before treating a lower repayment as a genuine saving.

Car-loan refinancing is worthwhile when the new arrangement improves the outcome after every switching cost is included. A lower repayment by itself is not proof of a saving: it may come from restarting the loan over a longer term.

Compare from today's payout

The original amount borrowed is no longer the comparison point. Request a current payout letter showing the amount needed to close the existing loan and the date to which it applies. Then compare that payout with the proposed new amount, term, rate, fees and scheduled repayments.

Use four figures:

  1. the current payout today;
  2. the remaining repayments under the existing contract;
  3. the total repayments and fees under the proposed refinance; and
  4. the number of months it takes for any repayment saving to recover the switching costs.

Lower repayment versus lower total cost

If a borrower has three years remaining and refinances over five years, the monthly commitment may fall even if the total interest paid rises. Run both a matched remaining-term comparison and the proposed longer-term comparison. That makes the price of additional cash-flow room visible.

The Moneysmart personal-loan guide recommends comparing interest, comparison rates, fees and early-repayment conditions together. Ask the existing lender about payout or early-termination charges and ask the proposed lender about establishment and ongoing fees.

Vehicle value and age still matter

A refinance lender assesses the vehicle as security. Age, kilometres, condition, model demand and the relationship between payout and value can affect the available term or whether a secured refinance is suitable. If the payout is above the vehicle's value, the application may need a contribution or a different structure.

Reasons that can support a review

A refinance review may be sensible after a material improvement in credit conduct, a reduction in other debts, a move from a specialist loan to a mainstream pathway, or a need to change the repayment structure. It can also be useful when several obligations are being assessed together, but consolidation should be tested on total cost and term rather than convenience alone.

When staying put may be better

The current loan may remain more economical when the remaining term is short, switching fees are high, the rate difference is small or the vehicle no longer fits another lender's security rules. A borrower planning to sell soon should compare the cost of refinancing with simply paying out the existing contract at sale.

Keep any cash-out amount separate. Otherwise a larger new loan can make the refinance look more expensive without showing that part of the cost relates to new borrowing.

How X Lend Finance reviews it

We obtain the current payout, model the remaining contract and compare suitable replacement structures across our panel. The recommendation should show the cash-flow change, switching costs, term difference and estimated total cost. Approval and pricing remain subject to the selected lender's assessment of the applicant and vehicle.
